Breaking the Sticky Note Addiction

by Chemain Evans

20 variegated colors fluttering on the top of the desk;
5 more stuck to the filing cabinet;
7 next to the phone;
3 stuck to the computer monitor;
14 on the calendar (on various days of various months);
35 stuck on the reminder board.
IS THERE NO END?

Could your work area use some serious redecorating? (And we're not talking about turning the Sticky Notes into wallpaper!) Are you, or someone you know, a Sticky Note Junkie? Do you feel a twinge of excitement as you open a new pack, smell the glue and dream of new places to put them? STOP-Save the Trees! Breaking the Sticky Note addiction doesn't require a 12-step program! All you need is a better system.

The truth is, most of us use Sticky Notes because we've been fooled into believing that they make us more organized. By writing things down on Sticky Notes we've been made to believe that we're no longer muddling up our brains trying to remember all that information, leaving us free to concentrate on "more important" things. In reality, we're making our brains work harder at trying to create order out of the chaos left in the trail of Sticky Notes. If there's no real place to transfer their information to, they just pile up wherever they are stuck, making your work area look like something akin to a multi-colored graveyard.

We've convinced ourselves that Sticky Notes help us remember things, but what good are they if we can't remember where we cast them into the sea of notes surrounding us? How much time do we waste hunting through Sticky Notes to find one small bit of information? How often, once used, do they actually get thrown away? Don't they just get reshuffled into the pile "just in case" we need them later?

How much time is wasted mentally trying to keep track of all that stuff, not to mention the time wasted organizing and reorganizing it? Like it or not, your brain is subconsciously trying to keep track of what's on all those Sticky Notes and where they are, and is probably overwhelmed at the daunting task! After all, you can't store all this information in your brain unless you have a remarkable capacity to rapidly transfer information into long-term memory.

There has to be a better system! Wouldn't it be fantastic if you could organize all the information on your Sticky Notes without having the Sticky Notes? Imagine actually being able to find something in just a few seconds as opposed to a few minutes! However, with the myriad organizational products and software out there to choose from, a person could get easily overwhelmed just thinking about it! But once again Simple Joe comes to the rescue! (Cue "Theme from The Lone Ranger".)

Simple Joe's Notes and Reminders is a computer program designed to organize everything in such a way that you can easily find it when you need it! Notes and Reminders allows you to store user names, passwords, web site URLs, email addresses, phone numbers, address, tips, tricks, shortcuts, ideas, grocery lists, and anything else you can come up with! Notes and Reminders uses types and subtypes to organize your information, and is fully customizable because you decide the types and subtypes that you need, so you never have more than you need. Notes and Reminders also has search and print capabilities.

Simple Joe's Notes and Reminders puts everything in one place and makes it easily accessible with just a few keystrokes. Need to know your Amazon.com password? It's right there in the password file you've created. Where's your list of ideas for your next book club discussion? Right there under the Type (e.g. Ideas) and Subtype (e.g. Book Club) you created. Need to make a list of items to pick up on your way home? Put it in your lists file and print it out at the end of the day.

Eliminate all the distracting little sheets of paper all over the place! Round them all up and transfer their information to something a little more permanent, efficient, and user-friendly. Of course, you may never fully break the habit of using Sticky Notes, but at least you'll be on your way. Happy organizing!
